The Fosnot project as described is nauseating. The main thing elementary school teachers need to know is mathematics. Mostly they are already sympathetic with children and understanding of their troubles, both personal and in learning. It is mathematics they are lacking, and Fosnot is no help. I'm sorry your reporter didn't make this plainer. In particular, the last sentence, "Mathematics is about ongoing observation of the world about you," is false. It is about mathematics.
