Supplementation of TERC Investigations in District 2

To Chancellor Klein, Deputy Chancellor Lam and members of the Children First Numeracy Working Group
From Edwin Hittig

December, 2002

Dear Chancellor Klein, Deputy Chancellor Lam and members of the Children First Numeracy Working Group:

Our children have progressed through the math programs in PS 40 and IS 104 in Manhattan's District 2. It has been difficult for our children doing the TERC program and it has been difficult for us when we tried to help them. Much has been made of the math scores in District 2 and in our respective schools. However little "officially" has been said about all of the supplementation that has been paid by the parents who can afford it because of the insufficiency of TERC. One mother in our building who has twins introduced me to Kumon training on 11th St. There are many students there from 40 and 104. In addition, Kaplan, in Cooper Square has many students who want more so that they can qualify for better schools. Why is there this great need for supplementation when TERC is supposed to be so good? Maybe the students and the parents know more than the "educators" as to what is best for them.

Sincerely,

Edwin Hittig
